Even though I wasn't involved in such groups, I knew many of the characters that took their football to another level (that is why the individuals feel so real in Dougie's novels to me). The pulsating times come alive in this book, like refreshed blood flowing through the veins. The story is based in the late 90s, and as you travel along with all the characters, you can feel and smell that pungent ambience from those times.Īs somebody who has travelled home, away and abroad with Spurs, it resonates. To the frustration of Paul Jarvis Billy Evans manages to stay one step ahead of his pursuer. But there is more to Billy than just what the observers see from outside. Jarvis reasons that Mr Evans is trafficking narcotics. Like life, Dougie Brimson's novels are not that straightforward. Jarvis believes that this time he is going to have Billy Evans and put him away for a very long time. Jarvis finds out that the Cockney lad is putting together a group of football hooligans or 'Super Crew' to follow the England national soccer team to Italy. But to Jarvis, he is a villain, thug and a cop killer and he is out to get him. An ordinary, but smart Cockney geezer who made good, despite the establishment trying to push his type down. The book in question is called 'The Crew,' and without giving too much away, it is about a battle of wits between Paul Jarvis of the National Soccer Intelligence Unite and one Billy Evans.

Written by the master of suspense, Dougie Brimson. I have just finished re-reading an excellent book.
